Staining or varnishing wood is a delicate process. Especially when you're working with special African wood types. Some wood types certainly don't need staining, like mahogany or ebony. These definitely still need a varnish. To make sure you bring the best out of your wood when staining or varnishing, follow these three steps.

Step 1: Choose Your Products Wisely
Product is everything. You want to choose a quality stain or varnish. I recommend Axalta for quality and it's easy of use.
Step 2: Sanding Is Everything!
This step needs time. For larger projects, start off with a lower grit, going progressively finer. For delicate projects, immediately go for a fine grit.
Step 3: Apply the Stain
The trick here is to be consistent, and once you start, you need to finish. I use a rag for larger projects, or a brush when it comes to my hand-made custom wood pens.
